Employment Practice For A Diverse City

The Commission for Racial Equality has always been at the forefront of diversity practice. Part of the Commission's remit has involved developing and introducing recommendations and guidelines on how to avoid unlawful racial discrimination and harassment in employment and other areas.

Businesses small or large are positively encouraged to use the Code of Practice on Racial Equality in Employment to enable them to recruit, retain and promote ethnic minorities in a fair and just manner. The Code will provide guidance to employers on their duties, rights and responsibilities under the Race Relations Act It will also indicate how to treat all job applicants and workers fairly and equitably. As such, the Code's guidance applies across the entire equality and diversity spectrum, promoting as it does transparency in recruitment, retention and staff development.

Fair employment policies create a working environment free of unlawful racial discrimination and harassment, where morale is high, and staff feel respected and valued. Such an environment is key to staff retention in the war for talent.

Most importantly, using the code will reduce the risks of costly and time-consuming litigation and grievances besides fostering good relations within the workplace. Organisations demonstrating fair employment policies and conditions will become beacons of choice for talented and innovative workers.
